Dillingen
-
An amiable town with many faces. Dillingen had been seat of the government of the High Monastery of Augsburg, residence of the prince-bishops of Augsburg and important university town for many centuries. Cardinal Waldburg confessed in the year 1548 that he ‘would not rather be at any place on this earth with more pleasure’ than in Dillingen, his town of residence. And even today, the visitor will recognize the great historic past in the many historic sights in the very heart of the town between ‘Mitteltorturm’ and the former university, between castle and basilica St. Peter. Dillingen (18,500 inhabitants), often called the ‘Swabian Rome’, seems to be particularly charming because of its idyllic scene, historic importance, and modern open-mindedness.
