The town of Aichach (21,000 inhabitants approx.) is situated in the picturesque, hilly Bavarian landscape in the region once ruled by the Wittelsbacher dynasty and is well-known for its historic townscape. In 1981, Aichach won the federal competition “Citizen, it’s about your township” thanks to the particularly successful reconstruction of the medieval city center with its old gabled houses, its two town gates and its town hall which dates back to the 17th century.
The newly renovated town museum and the branch museum exhibiting the national pre-historic collection, which focuses on “findings in the area of the former Oberwittelsbach castle” provide an insight into the history of the area. On top of that there is the old castle yard in Oberwittelsbach where the former ancestral seat of the Wittelsbacher family was situated and the moated castle in Unterwittelsbach which belonged to Duke Max, the father of Sisi who later was to become Empress of Austria and who spent part of her childhood in this castle. Aichach is twinned with the towns of Schifferstadt, Brixlegg in Tyrol and Gödöllö in Hungary.
